Our Honeymoon to... Tasmania

Our trip to Tassie was fantastic and we want to go back. We spent a week in Launceston, a few days in Port Arthur, another week in Hobart and finally 3 days in Port Sorell.

The trip over (and back) on the Spirit was ok but both of us felt the affects of motion sickness.

Devonport to Launceston

Once we got to Devonport and back onto dry land we felt much better. The first thing we wanted was breakfast and a coffee. Walking around Devonport on the Saturday morning we noticed most of the shops were closed but we did find a cafe open to get a quick bite to eat and drink. After that it was back in the car for the hour drive to Launceston.

Cateract Gorge

A few minutes drive from the hotel is Cataract Gorge Reserve. We packed a picnic lunch and headed out. We went on the chairlift then up to Eagle Eyrie Lookout. The lookout took about 30 minutes to get to as it was a fair way up with steep steps and slippery rocks in places. The walk up was tiring but the views were worth the effort. Once we got back down we relaxed with some lunch and watched the many peacocks walking around the park.

Later that day we went on a peaceful boat ride on Cateract Gorge.

Tassie Zoo

Tassie zoo is not that big but has animals that we don't have at home. Watching the tassie devils eat is a experience that we won't forget anytime soon. They are quite visious when they are hungry and very loud towards each other. A funny moment happend when we were watching a parrot. It was watching us and saying "Hello" over and over again to us. As we started to walk away, Erryn jokingly said goodbye and waved to the parrot, it then said "Goodbye" back to us.

Marakoopa cave

The next few days we spent enjoying the sites and did a lot of walking around Marakoopa cave and Tasmazia. The cave is a constant 9°C and is plesent to walk in. Looking at cave formations that are hundreads of thousands of years old is something that everyone should do at least once.

Port Arthur

The journey to Port Arthur took a few hours and we broke up the drive by stopping in a few places on the way. We spent two days walking around Port Athur including a ghost tour, river cruise and dinner at the restaurant.

Hobart

Hobart is a great place and visiting the Cadbury Factory was something that we wanted to do. Seeing how chocolate is made is interesting and getting a few free samples is always a good thing.

Plenty of walking... yes, more walking, over the next days as we wend to Mount Wellington, Russell Falls, the Shoot Tower, Enchanted Woods and Tahune Airwalk. The sights and places we went are something that we will remember for a long time to come

Salamanca Market was the plan for Saturday however the heavans opened up and we spend the day trying to stay dry. One the plus side it was the only day that rained the whole time we were in Tassie so we can't complain too much.

Port Sorell

Getting to Port Sorell via the Great Lake took most of the day and several hours of driving took its toll on us. While we did enjoy parts of the drive and the scenery, we were glad to get to the hotel room for a relaxing afternoon.

We heard about a shop in Latrobe called Reliquaire from a few people and told that we *must* go there. We did not know exactly what to expect but the place is amazing. It took us about 2 hours to walk around in and has all sorts of stuff from the weird and wonderful to the bizzare and strange. Upon entering the shop we were greeted by staff who informed us of the rules, yes, rules like no photography in the shop and a map. At first we thought it was strange to be given a map but soon found out that it was needed as the store is truly amazing with room apon room of different things to see and buy. If you get a chance to go to Latrobe in Tassie, go to Reliquaire. Also the fudge is really nice and we went back the next day to buy more fudge and explore more rooms and see things we missed the first time.

More exploring of the surrounding area and we found the Cherry Shed. A shop and factory were everything is cherry flavoured were we bought some liquor and jam

Cradle Mountain and a few walking paths in the area is something we want to do again. We spent few hours at the mountain taking in the sights.

Devonport

Heading back to Devonport after a few weeks in Tassie was a sad and happy time at the same time. We were glad to be heading home but we also wanted to stay longer as there was a lot of things on our list that we missed seeing. We do plan on going back and time will tell if that does happen.

Back on the Spirit we tried to relax but also knew what was ahead of us... a night of feeling ill while the ship rocked up and down.
